Why do people join a union?

If you've heard a lot about unions in the media, perhaps because of the threat of job loss, or working conditions are unreasonable or inappropriate, then perhaps you might consider joining a union.

Here are 5 reasons why people join a union

1. Larger Voice

If a person complains of a problem employee, such as working conditions, then management can not hear, but if many do, through a union, are much more likely to be heard.

Employees who work for companies in similar industries or similar can be heard using the power of a union too. In detail, the production or where there are often threats of closures or other changes, belonging to a union can prove to be effective.

2. Problems that affect

Unions campaigning on behalf of their members, on a series of questions, which can be local, sectoral, or national. Perhaps you are suffering from a closing factory, or a company that you supply to moving its operations overseas. Perhaps your region is dependent on a specific sector, like agriculture or manufacturing, and these areas are affected by the current economic climate. It could be affected by new laws, or by companies that are changing their emphasis. There are a lot of problems that could affect, and your family, and being a member of a union could help you.

3. Workers' Rights

Workers' rights are important for every one per employee. People can not be discriminated against because of their race, age, religion, color, nationality, sexuality, gender, or for any other reason. Ensure that all employees are treated fairly and equally essential.

4. Campaigns

Unions campaign against injustice in the workplace, or to promote a specific problem, such as for workers in a particular industry or a particular sector as a whole. Local problems may be determined by closing or opening of a factory, which means more or less unemployment. Sectoral issues affect all workers in the same sector, such as agricultural workers, those in the automotive, or retail. National campaigns affect all workers in all sectors, and include issues such as minimum wage, working hours and pensions.

5. Unions can help change government policy

Unions are frequently consulted on issues affecting government policy, such as working hours, wages and conditions and issues that affect all workers in a particular area, or perhaps when a large company goes into administration. The search can be on behalf of other countries, to see how policies or changes that affect workers in different countries.

Now you know more about the work done by a trade union, and how it can help, why not consider joining a union?...
